What is CMM
CMM, developed by the SEI (Software Engineering
Institute) of Carnegie Mellon University, is recognized
as the quality standard for excellence in the software industry,
with a maximum level of 5.
CMM aims for excellence in the quality of
software by improving the quality of the processes used in
its development. In order to achieve such, CMM
places emphasis on concepts like quality management, the implementation
of repeatable processes, gathering of statistical data and
work on the process level.
IFS, a SEI-CMM Level 3 company
In October 2004, IFS became
the sixth company in the country to successfully complete
the assessment for SW-CMM Level 3. This achievement
is even more significant when considering that we share the
honor with companies of considerable size and recognition,
such as IBM and Motorola.

We approached the challenge with the
sincerity it deserved, contracting the Indian company
Siobhan Renaissance Information Technology (SRIT)
to analyze our development processes and define an action
plan to realize certification. |
The last step of the process was led by the
Indian affiliate of TÜV Rheinland, a
German company and a key global business quality certifier.
Fittingly, India boasts approx. 70% of the world’s companies
with the highest category certification, CMM Level
5.
What does this new level mean for our clients,
IFS, and the industry as a whole?
Our clients will benefit from this quality
certification through software projects that meet both deadlines
and budgets with a quality so high it will reduce maintenance
costs as well as dependency on external suppliers. They will
receive systems that meet the real needs of the business with
functions that do not become obsolete before implementation.
As for IFS itself, CMM forces
us to be more rigorous in how we measure our own performance,
thus producing improved project estimates and plans, fewer
software defects, as well as a continuous improvement plan
for all processes within the company.
As a software company we believe there is
no better way to present our credentials to the world than
demonstrating compliance with international quality standards.
In our view, certification processes play a vital role in
raising overall standards in the IT industry, as well as in
generating better business opportunities for Argentina as
an emerging force in international software development.
